Eat Two-Three Meals That Are 100% Grown Locally
Less additives, chemicals, and fossil fuels burned to transport, eating local goods is far better for the environment, and your pocketbook. Cooking at home is not easy, it takes a lot of prep work and cleanup. However, not only are you doing the environment good by doing this, but you will probably be in the healthiest condition you've been in for a long time.
Do Not Eat Out More Than Once This Week
Eating out takes up an incredible amount of energy, and it produces a large amount of waste. Save a few bucks and eat locally grown foods cooked right in your own kitchen. If you can limit yourself to only eating out once this week, then you're doing a good job in helping to save our planet.
Do Not Purchase More Than One Plastic Bottled Beverage
Cutting down on plastic bottles is easy, just keep a reusable container handy. You can even find a plastic bottle sitting around from last week, and reuse it all week. Just make sure to recycle it when you are done. Make every effort not to acquire a new one. In the legendary words of Bill Cosby, "Challenge."
Limit Red Meat to One Time This Week
Red Meat takes a lot of energy to process. From the farmers buying food to feed the cattle, to the machinery in the processing plant, one small bit of red meat uses a lot of energy. See if you can limit yourself to just one meaty morsel this week. You can do it, and you might even feel a bit better than usual.
Drive Speed Limit Two-Three Days
Easing off the accelerator and driving the speed limit can increase mileage, and decrease fuel consumption. It can also reduce speeding tickets. If you can do this more than one day per week, you are not only a law abiding citizen, but a true soldier in the green army.
Ride Bike or Metro Two-Three Days
Put a little more spice in your morning commute, and try taking the bus. You could just people watch, or maybe even spark up some interesting conversation with someone new. If you are a lone wolf then get some fresh air, and exercise, by riding your bike. If you can take this from one day a week to two or three, then you are well on your way to becoming a green machine.
Carpool Two-Three Days
Most people drive to work themselves, and this creates many problems. Energy is wasted, and roads and parking lots are crowded. Think about how nice it would be to save a little gas and catch some extra sleep while on your way to work. If you've already attempted this one day a week, you know how nice it would be to take it to two or three days.
Help Best Friend Check Their Car's Tire Pressure
Driving a car with low tire pressure is like driving a car around in the mud all the time. Using the free air compressor at a local auto gas/service station will make your car coast farther, and take less fuel consumption. Assuming that you are keeping up with checking the air pressure in your own vehicle, it'd probably be a good idea to check up on a friend. Come on, how often do you see them adjusting their air pressure? This is a good way to help spread the message of living green.
